If i go river fishing how should i set up my pole and what line and pole type should i use?
Posted by admin
My Dad and I are going River Fishing soon and usually have a problem with things getting stuck on rocks underwater.
So how can i prevent this?
What type of line and pole setup should i use for river sized fish (big ones)?
How should i set up the cork and hook and weight to get the best fishing chance?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
There are several variables to this question and w/o knowing all the details its difficult to be able to give you the perfect answer. (type of fish you are fishing for, bait you plan on using etc) But, here’s my two cents…. I would loose the cork all together. Rivers have current and I’d be willing to bet most of your hang ups come from the hook being dragged over objects on the river bottom. Use an egg shaped sinker (they have a low profile and can slip over most rocks) after the sinker tie on a swivel ( this will keep your weight from sliding down to the hook and possibly knocking the hook out of the fishes mouth, plus it will limit the resistance the fish feels when picking up the bait) followed by an 8-16" leader then the hook. If you want to keep your bait off the bottom check for a floating bait made for the species of fish you are after, If using worms look into getting a "worm blower" its an air filled bottle with an injection needle that puts an air bubble into the worm and makes it float. If you are fishing for catfish or other bottom feeders there is no need to elevate the bait. The weight of the weight you use would depend on the current of the river, I would guess at least a half ounce up to ? you want the bait to stay where you cast with the least amount of weight as possible. This set up should work well for you in a river, you will have to watch your rod tip for the strike instead of the cork, I like to use a bell with a barbless hook attatched to it I put the hook over the line between the last two eyelets on the rod after i cast and the bait had settled, then I take up some of the slack with the reel and the rest with the bell attatched to the line, I pull the bell so the line is taught and lay it on the ground. When a fish takes the bait the bell will sound and I dont have to be staring at my rod tip the whole time. Good luck hope this helps, and regardless of the outcome you get to enjoy one of lifes best gifts….fishing with your dad. Have fun and tight lines!
