Spices of Life – Hot and Sour Salmon with Greens

Posted by admin

Salmon sightings in the market used to be a sign of spring, but these days, we are lucky to have a year-round supply. This dish, Hot and Sour Salmon with Greens is one of my favorites from Spoonful of Ginger. It is so easy to prepare, yet so delicious with its tender bed of steamed bok choy.

What color line for fishing trout?

Posted by admin

I am going Trout Fishing in a clear stream next weekend. With that being said what is the best color line for fishing trout? I have 2 4lb lines, green clear line and a red clear line. Which one is best?
I have heard good things and bad things about red fishing line. Should I swap it out for the greenish line?
Thank you.

With you only havin’ two lines ta’ work with, for trout the greenish clear would be your best bet. Only red line I’ve tried is Cajun and in my personal opinion, that stuff is as useful as P _ _ S on a’ dead ‘Opossum aka Possum. When I rig for trout, majority of times a leader is used ~ again personal opinion <);-3

Note: With Trout the better color would be leaning towards the clear ie., natives (trout that are maturing and have been in the waters for a’ spell) are more likely to see the line then say planted/stocked (hatchery) ones and I guarantee the natives will stay clear of it…

Difference between fishing in a pond and fishing in a river?

Posted by admin

What’s the difference? Are the methods different? What types of baits are best? Are floating crank baits good for River Fishing.

Like the other posts have suggested, it really depends on many "variables". In my opinion, one of the MAIN differences between River/Stream fish and Pond fish is the aggression factor.

A Pond doesn’t have "moving" water, therefore, fish get a LONG look at any lure presented to them.

River/Stream fish generally have to make feeding choices quicker, making their aggression level a bit higher.

In other words, fast moving lures can be very productive in a river/stream; whereas, Pond fish are more acclimated to slower moving forage. Although forage CAN be the same in both a river/stream and a pond, there is a higher percentage that Crawfish and Insect’s will be more prevalent in a river/stream. For this reason, it’s a common practice for stream/river fishermen to use Crawfish colored lures and Inline Spinner’s.

Methods for finding fish are also different- In a pond, fish could be anywhere- from the shoreline to a deep-water sunken island. Fish in a pond will generally be more "spread out" with specific territories for the most dominant fish, (I’ve caught the same fish in the same spot many times in a pond).

Fish in a stream will usually find pools of slower moving water, eddys and area’s just outside the major flow of water.

Large river systems are completely different- Fish in LARGE rivers will move with the tides and with baitfish, (if the river has a tidal influence). Tidal influenced fish love a moderate current and will generally stage/set-up on the same structure type, depending on tidal times, (IE: High-Tide, Mid-Tide, Low-Tide). Basically, if you find baitfish/natural forage AND current you’ll find predator fish. The trouble with large river systems? Predator fish will generally move around SO MUCH it can be hard to find them! That’s why it’s a good idea to move around and fish a variety of structure and habitats to get an idea about the movements of the fish. On a river, if your getting no action- MOVE!

Floating/diving Cranks can be VERY productive on Rivers. Check On-line what the predominant forage is on the river you plan to fish and purchase Crankbaits accordingly. A good idea is to have some crawfish colors (in Brown, Green, Red), and some baitfish colors, (in Bluegill, Shad/Shiner, Pogy).

Hope this extra info helps ya? Good luck!
