What are some good baits for river fishing?

I am not new to fishing but new to lures and I would find it helpful if somebody could tell me what are some lures that can catch a lot of fish I am not looking to catch huge fish but to catch smaller fish with an occasional lunker and something that is relatively easy to fish.
what type of fish do you want to catch?
crappie/bream i would use a crappie jig bass pro makes one called squirming squirt
for bass a plastic worm/lizard are good for a starter also jigs have been working a lot for me right now

I am fishing in the little miami river where there is excellent smallmouth bass fishing. Any tips?
I fish smallmouth by wading or floating down stream. I use about a 3 inch gulp grub on a jig or an X rap. I cast down stream from large. rocks or deep holes. And work my bait up to the rocks or through the holes.

freshwater trout not salwater
I used to go to Jones Beach for those fish. Their pier is free to fish on and is a great spot. I’d recommend using Spearing to catch them too =)
