Where in N. CA will I find the best Steelhead fishing?

I am in Sacremento and don’t mind driving a few hours. Help!

If I had to pick one river it would be the Smith river just North of Crescent City California. The California state record came from the Smith and steelhead over 20 pounds are caught every year. Call ahead, as river conditions will effect how or if you can fish.

Redwood creek in Orick California is another good bet for the steelhead.

There are others, but I am trying to keep this short.

Here are the closest rivers for steelies right now….I should know…I live in Sac.

American River – you’ve got to work to get into them right now.

Feather River – Low flow section and the Outlet will be holding spawning fish right now

Trinity River – haven’t heard anything in a few weeks….

Upper Sac. River – some steelhead up near Redding, but a mix of nice trout and steelie catches

If I had the choice, I’d be headed to the Low Flow section of the Feather for sure….but, I’m confined to the American until I can get some time off work.

Fished steelhead from Sacramento to Oregon since 1985, even managed to catch a few.
